Postpartum Care
In Ayurveda, the postnatal period (up to 45 days after delivery) is considered highly important for the health and well-being of both the mother and the newborn. This phase is called Sutika Kala, and proper care during this time helps the mother regain strength, balance hormones, promote lactation, and prevent long-term health issues.
1. Dietary Care (Ahara)

Easily digestible, warm, and nourishing foods are recommended.

Use of ghee, herbal soups, medicated rice (kanji), and spiced preparations with cumin, fenugreek, ginger, and ajwain to improve digestion and lactation.

Avoid cold, heavy, and processed foods.
2. Herbal Medicines & Tonics

Dashamoolarishtam, Jeerakarishtam, Ashokarishtam, Lehyams (like Sathavari Lehyam) are commonly prescribed to restore strength, balance Vata, and support lactation.

Taila (herbal oils) and choorna (powders) may be advised for internal and external use.
3. Body Treatments (Abhyanga & Swedana)

Warm oil massages (Abhyanga) with medicated oils (e.g., Dhanwantharam Thailam, Bala Thailam) help relieve fatigue, body aches, and balance Vata.

Herbal steam (Swedana) reduces stiffness, improves circulation, and aids healing.
4. Uterine Care

Specific herbal decoctions are given to help contract the uterus and eliminate toxins (lochia).

Strengthening of pelvic muscles and uterus is supported through internal medicines and external therapies.
5. Emotional & Mental Well-being

Ayurveda emphasizes rest, relaxation, and emotional support.

Calming practices like meditation, pranayama, and listening to soothing chants are encouraged.
6. Infant Care (Bala Paricharya)

Gentle oil massages for the baby with Ayurvedic oils to improve growth, immunity, and sleep.

Guidance on feeding and immunity-boosting practices.
